Entry to The Rule-Discovery Paper Puzzle Game Jam.
Credit to (ROT13 due to mechanics spoiler but you can just follow the link to this game that I strongly recommend) Gurgn naq Cnenyyqbk ba Jbeyqyvarf for inspiring the concept.
Comes with a full set of solutions.
Hints for the ruleset per the first puzzle that uses each rule:
1-2:
Dashed outlines indicate targets.
More:
The path acts as a conveyor belt (yes, this game uses motion, however, all but a few levels don't require a lot of dragging objects around).More:
The targets indicate the positions of dots upon halting, hence the need for additional space in 2.3-6:
The rule discovery in these levels mostly relies on puzzles 3 and 4. In 3, there are many ways to point the dot to the target but only one is correct.
The path cannot intersect a red shaded cell.
A target is positioned somewhere if and only if (in the correct solution) a dot appears there when motion ends.
More:
Considering the fact that targets outnumber dots, there must be a way to clone dots.More:
Look ahead: In later puzzles, we see many dots forming polyominoes. How would such an object behave when moved by a conveyor belt in more than 1 direction? The next hint explicitly states how a special case of a more general rule is used in puzzles 3-6.More:
If a dot is on a turn in the path, it simultaneously travels in 2 directions. Most of the time (i.e. when the perimeter of the level is shaded), dots disappear when moved out of the level.
The path does not need to begin on a dot.
7-8:
There are no targets in these levels. Also, notice that there are no shaded cells outside of the level.
More:
In hindsight (this was written some time after the game was submitted), the lack of shaded cells outside of the level isn't strictly to prevent alternate solutions and partially relies on an abandoned mechanic so I'm sorry if this was confusing (originally, there were going to be levels with internal walls but they were cut for time). In effect, the point is that sending dots outside of the level will not work here.More:
A pair of dots are deleted if they move to the same cell on the same time step.9-12:
In 9, it seems the rightmost dot must be moved remotely.
More:
Adjacent dots are glued together and form the polyominoes seen in later puzzles.More:
Polyominoes move in much the same way as individual dots, including on turns in the path.More:
Using the principal from puzzles 7 and 8, experiment a bit and work step by step in order to solve 11 and 12.13-14:
These puzzles require having polyominoes move in opposing directions.
More:
This is achieved by having the path segments which intersect the polyomino be in the respective directions, generalizing the behavior of dots on a turn in the path.15:
Shaded cells now appear inside of levels. If a dot is on a shaded cell, it is deleted.
16-17:
These puzzles require having polyominoes move in all 4 directions simultaneously.
A-C:
These puzzles contain infinitely large targets.
More:
To create an infinite polyomino, you must build a machine that does not halt. Targets now indicate a place where dots will eventually begin to appear infinitely many times (and all targets are in sync with eachother). Technically this does not contradict previous puzzles :)| Updated | 5 days ago |
